How do you make clips?

I have all of the Buffy/Angel dvds, but obviously they're all in the wrong format... so how do I either rip and format the dvd files, or find other clips to use? The closest thing I've been able to do is record the clips off the computer with a digital camera, but it looks like crap. HELP.
